In 1928 there was a masterplan that mandated that all black and brown residents of Austin move to the Eastside of town or our services would be shut off (water and power). We complied and made the Eastside our home for generations to come, we opened up businesses, we raised our families and we created a vibrant culture that will always be felt and never forgotten. Now that Austin has grown a lot of us have been priced out of our homes and the majority of us have had to relocate to North Austin and other neighboring towns. Black Austinite is a reminder that we are still here, still thriving and we have not forgotten where we come from!
